Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

One of the most popular plastic surgeries, Tummy tuck (Abdominoplasty) is a plastic surgery procedure that corrects persistent fat tissues and sagging skin structure despite diet and exercise. Surgery is performed to remove skin and fat from the abdomen. The abdominal connective tissue is tightened using sutures, giving the patient a taut, flat stomach. This type of surgery is typically favored by those who have significant belly fat, sagging abdominal skin, and weak abdominal walls.

Reasons for Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

To improve the appearance of the abdominal area, a "tummy tuck" is performed. Some people prefer to get a tummy tuck (Abdominoplasty)if they have excess fat or skin on their stomach. Liposuction is often used in conjunction with a stomach tuck to effectively eliminate fat and remodel the lower abdomen. A waistline surgery results in the removal of belly fat and because fat cells do not renew themselves, you won’t regain the lost weight. It is possible to gain weight following a belly tuck, but it is rare. However, it's more likely that this fat will be stored in other locations.

What is Tummy Tuck?

It is the procedures also called Abdominoplasty that removes excess skin, fat and stretch marks from the abdominal wall and strength loose abdominal muscles. Pregnancy (the most common), aging, weight loss are the common causes excess/sagged skin and fat tissue with it. This procedure can be applied to both women and men. But there is one thing that needs to be cleared here is that Tummy Tuck is never a weight loss surgery. It could be a surgery that strengths the loose abdominal muscles or removes stretch marks, but never weight loss.

Who is the Good Candidate for Abdominoplasty Surgery?

Tummy Tuck works very well in those who have sagged skin which does not respond to exercises and in those have stretch marks on their tummy area, as well as those who have loose abdominal muscles.

Are There Different Types of Tummy Tuck?

It can be classified to Full or Mini Tummy Tuck. This is completely an issue to be decided based on your current situation. The main difference between full and mini is the belly button place changing. While in full abdominoplasty belly button will be repositioned to its new place, in mini tummy tuck belly button place will not be changed. At the same time with mini tummy tuck internal corset for loose abdominal muscles will be hard to perform it, sometimes will be impossible. Mini tummy tuck surgery with a smaller area excision will not save you much from stretch marks as well as full abdominoplasty does.

What will be my benefits with Abdominoplasty?

At the end of the Tummy Tuck, you will get rid of the excessive and sagging skin that is present in the belly region and also the existing stretch marks (striae). If you have loose abdominal muscles and if they are separated from each other, this problem will be solved with the Internal Corset method will be described below.

Will only Tummy Tuck be Enough for Me?

Whether or not only tummy tuck will be sufficient, will reach the clarity after your plastic surgeon’s examination. In some cases, Liposuction may be required to be applied simultaneously to existing regional fat deposits especially waists and the area located upper abdominal area. But i need to clarify something here.
There are some patients who have both loose abdominal muscles and distention of belly because of fat deposits around internal organs. In this such situations even if Tummy Tuck and Liposuction will work, the result will not be like person who have not too much distention. The best way is first loosing weight then have abdominoplasty. But if you cannot loosing weight with Tummy Tuck and Liposuction you will be benefitted with flatter belly.

How about Loose Abdominal Muscles?

Loose abdominal muscles and separation, which are more common in women after multiple pregnancies, can be fixed with this surgery. Diastasis Recti is the weakening of the abdominal muscles and the separation from each other, thus creating an image of the belly forward as if there is a large herniation.

After removing all the skin to be removed, Diastasis Recti which is separated loose abdominal muscles from each other can be repaired with the middle line joining process called Rectus Plication or Internal Corset. As you see diagram below loose abdominal muscles will lost their strength and will separated. Plication which is called internal corset will fix the problem

Why is skin having stretch marks?

When the dermis which is a thick and main stability layer of the skin is distended it loses its collagen and elastin strength. After dermis is loosing its stability which is formed by collagen and elastin fibers stretch marks occurs. Even if there many scientific researches about stretch marks we could not exactly treat it. If there is too much stretch marks on your tummy, with tummy tuck surgery you will be get rid of most of them. Actually stretch marks will not be treated they will just be excised with the skin that is planned to be excised.
I always say to my patients who are complaining from stretch marks, if someone who finds the cure of stretch marks will be awarded by nobel prize

Surgery and Early Period of After Surgery

The operation takes 2 to 4 hours on average. It may take longer according to the operations to be added such as liposuction. It is performed under general anesthesia and you need to stay overnight in the hospital after surgery.
The wound will be planned by extending from your hips to your other hips with the condition of hiding under your underwear. The middle part of the scar will be close to the pubic hair. After removal of the excess skin, the belly button will be adapted to its new location. Therefore, there will be a scar that surrounds the belly button. As the name suggests, Mini Tummy Tuck is a simpler procedure. For example, the long cut in the full abdominoplasty will be shorter in mini abdominoplasty, and there will be no scar around belly button, as it will not need to be repositioned in mini abdominoplasty.
At the end of the operation, a corset – abdominal binder – garment is placed on the surgical area to apply a certain level of pressure. This corset will both prevent a possible accumulation of blood in the surgical area and give you confidence in your movements especially after applying an internal corset for loose abdominal muscles. Drain placement, which is valid for almost every surgery, is also required for this surgery. These thin tubes will be removed on average 2 to 3 days later. All stitches are resolvable, so there will not be a session of stitch-taking.
Scars of abdominoplasty will be evident in the early period, but it should not be forgotten that the scars will fade over time and lose their visibility. Otherwise, the desired results can be obtained with laser or surgical scar revisions. There will be no additional scars for internal corset application for loose abdominal muscles.
After the operation, we will help you to stand up and to walk as soon as you feel good. The faster you stand and walk, the more you are protected from possible complications. The pain is moderate (3-5 / 10) and is very easily controlled with pain relievers. It is very important to wear the corset for 6 weeks.
We want you to restrict your movements for about 2 – 3 weeks after the abdominoplasty surgery and want you to seriously stay away from heavy exercises for 2 months. Especially if I performed Internal Corset for loose abdominal muscles avoiding exercises will be vital after abdominoplasty surgery. But despite these, I can easily say that as far as I can see from my patients, you can return to routine daily activities after a period of 7-10 days.

Last word…

People who start exercising and be in dietary programs should postpone this procedure. As soon as you reach to your optimal weight, we may perform your surgery. In women who are planning to give birth, it will be very appropriate to postpone this surgery until after birth.
With abdominoplasty, there will be a serious physical change as a result of the removal of the sagging tissues and stretch marks on the tummy, and this will also contribute to the recovery of self-confidence in a great way.
